The actual chemistry, in one paragraph
Epoxy is a two-part resin and hardener that cures into a hard, thick, rigid film. It's aromatic, meaning its molecular structure contains benzene rings, and those rings absorb UV and break down — which is why epoxy ambers in sunlight. Polyaspartic is an aliphatic polyurea, a cousin of polyurethane with a deliberately slowed reaction so it can be applied by hand. Aliphatic means no benzene rings, which means no ambering.

What each one is genuinely good at
Epoxy's real advantage is body. A 100 percent solids epoxy goes down at 10 to 20 mils and stays there. It flows into minor surface imperfections and levels itself out, which means it hides a lot of sins in a slab that isn't perfectly flat. It also holds flake beautifully during a broadcast because the resin stays open long enough to accept chips.
Polyaspartic's real advantage is time and light. It cures fast enough that a crew can grind, base coat, broadcast, and topcoat a two-car garage in one day and hand you a floor you can walk on that evening. And because it doesn't amber, the section by the open garage door still matches the back corner in year six.
There's a third advantage that matters in cold markets: polyaspartic can be applied at temperatures where epoxy simply won't cure, and it stays more flexible when the slab gets cold, so it's less prone to cracking with the substrate.
Why the hybrid system is the honest recommendation
Here's our one strong opinion, and it costs us the easier upsell: the best value for a residential garage is an epoxy base coat with flake broadcast, topped with one or two coats of polyaspartic. Not a full polyaspartic system.
You get the thick, forgiving, self-leveling base where the film thickness lives, at epoxy prices. You get the fast-curing, UV-stable, abrasion-resistant surface where the wear actually happens. And you pay roughly 20 to 30 percent less than a full polyaspartic build for a floor that performs the same in every way you'll ever notice, because nobody notices the resin family six mils below the surface.
Full polyaspartic systems make real sense when the schedule is the constraint — a commercial space that can't close for a week, a rental turnover, a shop floor that needs equipment back on it tomorrow. Speed is a legitimate product. It's just not free.

The thing that matters more than either resin
Neither chemistry can save a bad bond. Prep is 80 percent of the outcome and it's identical for both products.
Diamond grinding to an ICRI CSP 2 to 3 profile. Moisture testing per ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride, 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet per 24 hours as the common ceiling) or ASTM F2170 (in-situ RH probes, 75 to 80 percent). Crack chasing, joint treatment, oil dig-outs. A properly bonded coating fails inside the concrete when you pull-test it per ASTM D4541, not at the bond line.

When you should skip both
Genuinely worth saying out loud.
If the space is a shed, a detached workshop, or storage where a car never parks, a DIY 100 percent solids epoxy kit and a rented grinder gets you 5 to 8 good years for under $500. You do not need polyaspartic on a floor that holds a lawnmower.
If your slab fails a moisture test, don't coat it with anything until the source is addressed. Both chemistries will fail, just on slightly different schedules, and you'll have paid twice.
If all you want is easy cleaning and dust control in a low-traffic space, polished concrete is a coating-free option that never peels because there's nothing to peel. It costs about the same and it's genuinely the better answer for some spaces.
